Your Kids First Day in School

Summer time is nearly over..... Kids are starting to go back to school. Overly excited students are getting back to school to see their old friends and classmates. But to new students excited as they are, their first day in school can actually make a lot of difference towards their outlook of what schooling is all about.

This can make or break them and this is why parents' guidance and support is very important and necessary during the first few days of their school. Parent's role is very significant in helping the kids cope up with their adjustment in the new environment. Parents should not pass this responsibility to their children's yayas or other family member. It is important that we as parents will let our children realize that we are there for them. Though in school, there will be a lot of children their age, a child can always be astounded by his/her environment. And without the necessary support to the child, it can lead to stress for children.

For children new to school, socialization is very important. And bright kid as they may be, children can be shocked with the new environment in school, new classmates, new teacher, new people. This can be a stress to children when left all alone. Plus the new activities they will do. All these can be factors that can lead to stress and has itself psychological impact on a child.
Parents should also limit their expectations for their children. A lot of parents expectations goes way beyond what their children can do and this causes misunderstanding between parents and children. Communication is a good starting ground for parents and children. Creating an open line communication is important. Also, knowing what your children's activities are and participating in their activities.

Children's Fashion Made Affordable

If you are a fashionista mom or even an ordinary working mom, you, of course would like to see your kids on their best outfit always. As a mother, praises from other people about your kids' dress and outfits will definitely uplift your spirits and put smile on your faces. But you don't need to buy branded clothes and shoes to make them look good.

In this times of difficulty and economic crisis, only the gifted few can really buy those branded clothings and shoes for your kids. There are clothe and dresses that are affordably beautiful and are made with quality. You do not really need to go to Divisoria to be able to buy affordable clothes for your family. In divisoria, definitely you can avail goods for a much lower prices but somehow, the quality of the good is at stake. I am saying this from my previous experience. I bought my daughter a closed purple flat shoes which my daughte really loves for P150.00. Excitedly, she wears it to try it out and a few minutes after trying it on, the design ribbon/bow got loose. So what I did having paid the goods already, I asked for a replacement of a different type of shoes. Pink Hello Kitty sandals (open shoes) is what we choose for replacement. Two days after, the design hello kitty face got loose again. This time I glue it with mighty bond. So you see, buying stuff in divisoria does not necessarily means that you are saving money. It depends on the quality so better really check the goods before buying them.

So now, if you are thinking of going to divisoria, think again. Your trip might not be as worthy as having a trip to the mall because you can buy most of the stuff in the department stores without the hassle.

Where can you buy quality and yet affordable clothes for your kids? Here are my list of suggstions. First in the list is The Landmark department store, there is one in makati and one in trinoma. Landmark offers a lot of bargain or sale items. They have pajamas, short and sandos that are good in quality and yet affordable. All of the items are branded although not all of them are known brands or the first class brands. Brands includes disney baby, bebe soen, barbie, baby toons and a lot more. You have the option if you wan to buy individually or the ones they offer in pack of two's or three's. Comparing the price of the goods in divisoria and landmark, prices of items in landmark can absolutely compete with that of in divisoria. You will be surprise to know that you will spend almost the same amount of money in landmark and divisoria with less the effort, perspiration adn haggling with people and prices. An example of this is when I bought my daughter, again from my trip to divisoria (first trip again after 3 years) underwears with cinderella/snow white/ariel design which I bought for 3 for 100. I hardly knew that when I visit landmark a week ago, they have the same kind of underwears for 99.75 and they have other designs to choose from. And the pajama pants with strawberry shortcake design I bought for 80 pesos well infact, you can buy pajama pants (sets of 2) in landmark for 119.75-149.75 depending on the size. They have areas there near the escalator wherein you can find good deal finds. They also have plenty of shelves there arranged by the brands from newbron to infants to toddlers.

Another promising store to go to is the Robinsons department store. One thing I love about this store is that they have same design t-shirts available for mother and daughter or father and son. The brand is 'Whatever' and they have a lot of designs to choose from although not all of the designs are available for both mother and daughter. Prices range from 139-200 depending on the design. Same thing with shoes, Landmark and Robinsons have ample ofshoes to choose from from not so much known brand to the famous brands. But if you want same design shoes like me, I suggest you get yours at Confetti shoe store. They have ample of designs to choose from. They have branches in Glorrieta 5, Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, they have also in landmark but not all the styles and designs are available.

RICKY MARTIN: GAY AND WONDERFUL

Who would forget the famous Ricky Martin? He is included in the boy group called Menudo way back 1980s. Remembering those good old days when they guested to different noon time shows and sing and dance to their music of Explosion and Like a Canon Ball. With his brown bob cut hair, colored polo and leggings.

This Perto Rican guy is really a hit back then and when he goes solo he also hit the chart and the heart of his fans here and in the world. For a while, he has been out of the scene and then he came back with the hit theme song of Livin La Vida Loca for FIFA Football cup. From the teeny bopper that he was from his Menudo days came a macho, oozingly sexy and handsome Ricky Martin. Are you not curious whatever happened to the years that he was off the scene?

He came back to the Philippines for a one day concert and I frantically went there to see him. So, I can say he is still loved by the Filipinos. After the concert and several chart topping songs and mtv, no news and update were heard from him again.

Now, after sometime, the news came out about him. Ricky Martin is a "fotunate homosexual man." Well, I still think he is handsome and sexy and definitely oozing with sex appeal. As for his homosexuality, who cares? As long as he is not cross dressing, he still is respectable to me. No offense to other homosexual man out there, I love gays and I respect what you do as long as it is decent but I am talking of specifically Ricky Martin here only. I do not want to see him cross dress. As for his twin son of surrogate origin, I am happy for him. How I wish I could the mother of those two kids? hahaha.

I am a fan of Ricky Martin and I do have so much respect for him. Knowing him, homosexual or not, does not make a difference and I am happy that he came to terms with accepting the real person inside him. This will allow him to move forward with his life.

POTTY TRAINING YOUR KIDS

A lot has been said for the topic of potty training your child. Different books will give you different tips and guide on how to potty train your child. But the big question is does it really work for you?

I am a mother of two. Niki, my daughter is 3 years old and almost 3 months and my son Jacob is 1 year old and 3 months. As I write this blog, me and my daughter Niki is currently undergoing a big change in her milestone. We are on the process of getting rid of her diapers for good. For the longest time, I am thinking and searching for the most effective way of teaching Niki how to get comfortable with the 'comfort room'. I searched and surfed different websites, read articles and books discussing the same topic.

Some people will tell you that at 3 years old, my daughter should be potty trained already. And sometimes, I am panicking because of the expectations of other people from Niki. Sometime ago, I tried teaching her to sit on the toilet bowl with her own Spong Bob soft seat but few days after she will refused to be out of her diapers again, so we go back to square one. Frustrating for me. My sister in law even bought her a pink duck potty chair but she will just use it as a car or horse when playing.

Now, again, I started to introduce again potty training. But this time, I think we will be successful. What do I learned from all this? That you should never ever forced your kid to potty train because the time will come that they will be ready and when this time comes, you should be able to notice. Your own kid will give you the sign that she/he is ready to use the potty chair. I started by taking her to share the bathroom with me while taking a bath. I explain to her everything I do in the bathroom. We even have the same 'loofa/net' to use for our body. Hers is smaller, a miniature of mine. When she was used to this routine already, I asked her one time while we are in the mall if she would like me to buy her a potty chair but this time it would really be a chair that really looks like a toilet seat and not the pink duckie that she was not able to associate it with. Niki chose a pink toilet seat with green cover accent.

This is a big change for Niki. Merely 2 months ago when we started to take the diaper out of her system and we are successful. Though she is not yet consistent in using her own toilet seat, she somehow manage to be out of the diaper even when we are out of the house. The problem I am focusing now is to make her poop in her toilet seat. She is still not used to doing that. But I am positive that soon enough we will overcome this challenge.

Lotion, Sun block -- Protection from Skin Cancer

Summer is here, the heat is intensifying as the day goes by. A lot of us are planning to have vacations, excursion or outings. Most of these activities will involved swimming either in the pool, sea, lake or river. All of these activities will expose us to sun whether we like it or not. The coldness of water will temporarily soothe our skin and body with the heat that we are feeling.

A lot of us already know that being exposed to the sun can lead to skin damage. But maybe only little of us know that whether we are exposed in the sun during childhood, teenage or adult life, it will still have effect in our skin than can lead to skin cancer or other skin diseases such as photo damaged skin. But wait, not only the sun can cause skin cancer especially during adulthood. It is said in a lot of books that UV rays can also damage the skin. This means that the lamps and lights that we used whether inside our household or in the office can greatly affect our skin. Maybe not today but in the future.

In our world today, cancer is not uncommon. People of all ages whether financially stable or not can be affected. Although skin cancer is more common to caucasian, fair skin Asian can be affected also. Though not all type of skin cancer metastasize and lead to death, it is still better if we would know some facts that can help us to prevent this from coming. After all, prevention is the best cure of all.

The big question is how to prevent skin cancer or other skin diseases. Skin cancer is one cancer that can easily be prevented. For one, not being expose to sun will help us prevent this. But putting on sunblock will be of really big help in the prevention of this. I , for one is a kind of person who is not so into lotion or sunblock. During my younger years, I always felt awkward and slimy when I apply lotion to my skin. I thought that those kind of stuff like lotion and sunblocks are for the vain in nature. I love the sun, I love the beach. I always go to the beach unprotected from the sun. Never had I imagine that these products will keep your skin healthy and protected. And these products will help prevent if not totally eradicate the disease itself.

Never did it come to my senses that I will be writing as much for lotions and sun blocks. Personally, I am not fanatic of these products. But we all have to know the importance of these products and how it can save a lot of people from having skin diseases or skin cancer. Lotion hydrates the skin. Like our body which is basically composed of 70% water, our skin also needs hydration. We have to intake 8-10 glasses of water per day to keep us away from dehydration. Our skin also lost their moisture everytime we take a bath and use heavily perfumed soap. That is why we need lotion or moisturizer. Sun block as the name entails blocks the sun so when we apply this to our face, it help blocks the UV rays the sun emit to prevent photo-damaged that creates older looking skin. Im sure any woman wouldnt like that.

So, what are the things we can do to keep not just our body healty but our skin also. First, it is advisable to use non-perfumed soap (mild soap), it could be in a form of bar or liquid soap. I personally prefer liquid soap. It already moisturizes the skin. Second, you can use oil after taking a bath or lotion. Oil feels much better but for those who are used to lotion, it can do as well.
At night, you can apply petroleum for those who have heavily dry skin. And for the calloused hands and soles, petroleum is the best way to hydrate it and moisturize it. Putting petroleum at bed time then wearing socks will help do the trick.

Handling Difficult Yayas

I've seen so many yayas come and go from my siblings' and cousins' children. Some of them stay long and some dont. Some of them has good values and characters and some you can curse. Some will teach your kids good deeds and some does not even know their responsibilities as yaya.

Now that I have my own kids, searching for a yaya has never been difficult for me. After 4 years of marriage, I have now two kids. My eldest is now 3 years old and my youngest is 1. I have two yayas, luckily, since me and my husband are both working and we just moved out of my inlaws house. The older yaya has been with us for almost three years now. She has been with us when my eldest daughter is just a month and a half old. At first, I had a hard time of trusting her with my firstborn. Looking at her physically, I am rattled with a cold nerve. She is in her early 40s, around 150lbs body frame with dark skin and a brusque physique. Not that I havea choice that time but giving the person a chance to prove herself is what is on my mind.

Now, we are on our third year relationship with our yaya. Our yaya being older than me and my husband has never been that big of a problem. There are times that she acts as our big sister and sometimes the tendency to act as "know it all" but still, I honor her because little by little, throughout the three years of being together she slowly open herself to us. We correct her not only the duty-bound responsibilities but as well as her life per se. Though it is hard for her somehow, she tried her best to follow. It is a little difficult for her and us at first though since the age factor is there already but someshow, we both manage to adjust with one another.

Yaya as we all call her, has been very good to our family especially the kids. She has her own flaws like her long time of phone calls to a lot of friends. And the friendliness she possess with almost every people she meet. She is really friendly to almost anyone and everyone. But she has been good with my kids.

Though the age factor gets in our way, I always make it a point that I assert authority to them especially in dealing with my kids. Respect is an important factor for any relationship. This is maybe one of the reason why our yayas stay with us. I respect them for what they are and in return they respect me. I listen to them and to their needs as an individual. As a person, I believe that they have to grow too. And I give them opportunity to explore their life.

Handling yaya is the same as having a relationship with a friend, boss, neighbor. It is a two way process. Though you have to emphasize your authority to them, you have learn to trust them and listen to them. You have to know them. Knowing your yaya is an important factor. So, get to know your yaya now.

AGE FOR MARRYING

Is there such a thing as a right age for marriage? Does anyone know when is the perfect timing for marriage? Is there a right and a wrong age for marriage?

Many of us will say 23 or 25 is the right age to marry but we cannot control the feelings of other individuals. Some were forced to marry at a young age due to teenage pregnancy and some due to arranged marriage. And some are to marry at a very old age or shall we say late bloomer. Some due to second or third marriages that their previous marriage did not work out.

But what if a couple to get marriage has a 20-year gap or more? Or what if one of the couples' age is the same as the age of the eldest or youngest child of the other couple? Nowadays, this kind of situation is not uncommon. Many celebrities here and abroad share this situation and they are happy. Calista Flockhart and Harrison Ford for instance, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Kris Aquino and James Yap, Tony Boy Cojuanco and Gretchen Barreto.

They are happy with their relationship and yet the age factor does not affect their relationship. Although for some, there are lots of adjustment to be made.

In any relationship there will be no right and wrong. It will always revolved within the couple, their happiness will lies within their own acceptance whether there will be age gap or not. In all ages of relationship, acceptance, respect and love are the important factor to make a relationship going.

MOVING SOLO.

Come February 24, it will be our 1 month anniversary from moving out of my inlaws' house and moving in to an apartment near my workplace. After living together in my inlaws house for more than 4 years, it was a rather difficult decision to make for me and my husband.

Moving solo is definitely not easy especially when you have two kids in tow. Being dependent to your family wherever side you choose to stay will somehow make a parasite in you. You always tend to share expenses and problems so it makes everything easier somehow.

Moving out is like starting all over again, starting from scratch or being back to zero but the big difference now for us is that we already have kids that we have to consider. One good thing though is that they are small enough not to question our decision.... hahaha..

Realization took place during the day we moved out. We only have the basics of everything and we do not even have our own ref!!!! But nevertheless, we survived our first week going solo. Good thing a lot of Save More grocery store are popping and popping from places to places that you would not miss the mall and I do not have to go to the wet market for the daily dinner.

Moving solo has its advantages and disadvantages. It gives you freedom, a lot of it. Freedom in doing things that you are not able to do before when you are under the roof of your family or relatives. You can have your own menu for the week. My kids eat whatever food is on the table. i gotta take care of my own family. The responsibility of taking care of my usband and my kids are always prioritized. And i can wake up a little later than anyone of you... hahaha... The only disavantage I can think of is the burden of expenses when the bills comes up. hahaha. Who would not want to share expenses???

So for those couple who are planning to get married, I just have one advice for you: go solo once you got married! It will be a completely different set up and experience but definitely it will be a good one for you.

WALKING PNEUMONIA ANYONE?

Does anyone of you heard of "walking pneumonia"?

This is a term now use to describe a mild type of pneumonia in which one afflicted does not require to be confined in bed or in a hospital. It can also be referred to as viral pneumonia. In whichever case, they are both mild, are able to work or walk. This cases can be treated by the regular antibiotics. One does not have to undergo chest x-ray to diagnose.

Just the past weekend, both my children were diagnosed to have pneumonia. Funny thing is, for my youngest, except for the cough, you cannot see anymore symptom that manifested in him. Just the plain simple cough. It can be with fever or without. As for my eldest, it was not diagnosed soon as pneumonia. The fever worsen and my little lost her appetite. The xray confirmed the pneumonia and just after that she was given her medication.

Skin Cancer - common or not?

Who said that only the Caucasian are prone to skin cancer?
Do you know that Filipinos as well are all at risk to skin cancer. There are said to be three (3) types of skin cancer but the commonest of all is what you called Basal Cell Carcinoma. And you do not have to be caucasian to acquire this kind of disease.
In this article, I would share and focus on this type of cancer which personally I am aware of. No, I do not have the disease but one member of my family does. The Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common skin cancer, it is rarely fatal but it can do damages to the surrounding skin and to the bones (which is likely common). This type of cancer usually develop to the skin mostly expose in the sun, usually the head, neck, arms and legs. Of course the most common cause of this cancer is the Ultra Violet (UV) ray which comes from the sun but as well as does that comes from the flourescent lamp although not as much as the ray from the sun can do.
This type of cancer starts up as a flat, brown-colored patch (could be scaly or not). It is usually difficult to distinguish from other sores or lesion because it does not manifest as one as soon as they develop. Sometimes for a long time that could be months or even years that it will just stay the same and no growth can be noticed. There are times that it grows in size but very minimal. For some, it can grow as big like half the size of a golf ball. To be able to diagnose this, one really has to undergo a skin biopsy.
Signs and symptoms could be bleeding, itchiness, pain but depending on the patient itself. It can very much affect the person if the lesion develops in his/her face.
There are three options for treatment of this type of skin cancer:
1. Surgical removal of the lesion
2. MOH's microsurgery
3. Imiquimod (aldara) cream
For the first option, depending on the size of the lesion and where the lesion is located but it can be done with local or general anesthesia. If you already have identified one while the lesion is small, this is the best option to take. The second option is not always readily available and it might be a little costly since not all dermatologist do this type of microsurgery. The last option is to apply imiquimod cream usually 5 times a week for 6 weeks with two day rest in between. The cream will cost you 350 a sachet and this sachet is good for one use only but I have visited some website that says it can be used for two days at least. The sachet is very small. You have to wash the area where you will apply this as well the hands that will apply the cream to the area. There can be redness, swelling (not so much), itchiness or pain.
As for my dear lola's case, we choose option three. Her lesion develop in her forehead years back never realizing it will be cancer. It manifested first as a small brown patch then later got bigger (probably 1inch by 1 inch). Fortunately it presents itself as a flat lesion. We got worried when one time upon washing her face, we found some blood on the lesion. We have it biopsied and confirmed it as Basal Skin Cancer. We are now on our third week of applying imiquimod cream and the lesion is responding well. Though it has been said that there are reactions while applying the medicine, for my lola's case, only redness, a little itchiness but no pain whatsoever.
This is just a reminder for all of us that we should never neglect our health and we should always do routine consultation.
